Seven Devils Rye

Although this whiskey from Koenig Distillery in Caldwell, Idaho, is billed as an “Idaho whiskey,” the actual distillate appears to be sourced from outside the state and then cut to bottling proof with water from the eponymous mountain range.

With a minimum four years’ barrel aging, this rye still has some noticeably green but still promising notes on the nose. The palate develops a fair hint of vanilla and oak that complements the natural spice of the rye grain nicely, although you may want to add just a few drops of water to the glass to help the subtler, softer notes develop better. If you are new to ryes, or are just a little curious, Koenig’s Seven Devils Rye is a suitable introduction to the style at an attractive price—well worth checking out over the cold winter months ahead.
